T5 vs T8 Grow Lights: Which Is Better?

If you’re building a plant shelf or a seedling rack, you’ve probably hit the T5 vs T8 question and felt a little lost. Both are tube grow lights, and both grow plants — but they’re built for different jobs. Pick the wrong one and you’ll either overpay or under-light your plants.

What’s the Difference Between T5 and T8 Grow Lights?

The “T” stands for tube, and the number is the tube’s diameter in eighths of an inch. A T5 tube is 5/8″ across (16 mm); a T8 tube is 1″ (26 mm). Everything else follows from that size.

A T8 is thicker, so it holds more LEDs and a real heatsink — that’s why T8 tubes run higher power and longer lengths (ours: 8W/60cm, 15W/90cm, 32W/120cm). A T5 is slimmer and lighter, handy in tight spaces, but tops out at lower power.

Neither is “better” overall — they’re sized for different jobs. T5 wins when every centimeter counts; T8 wins when you want one tube to cover a full shelf with even light.

Which Is Better, T5 or T8 Grow Light?

Answer three questions and you’re done:

  1. How tight is the space? The slim T5 fits packed, layered racks and keeps air moving. On a normal shelf, the T8’s wider footprint covers it in one tube.
  2. What are you growing? T5 is gentle — seedlings, herbs, low-light houseplants. T8 spreads more even light, so it suits leafy greens, microgreens, and fruiting plants like tomatoes, peppers, or strawberries.
  3. What are you upgrading from? If your fixtures already fit standard tubes, a T8 usually drops straight in — more below.

The honest rule: on a typical home shelf or small grow rack, most people end up happier with T8. It’s more forgiving, covers more surface, and leaves room to grow. T5 earns its keep in really tight, layered systems.

How Many T8 Grow Lights Do You Need for a Shelf or Grow Rack?

“How many do I need” trips everyone up, so here’s a concrete example. Take a 4-tier shelf, each tier 120 cm long, plants about 30 cm below the light:

  • One 120 cm T8 per tier is the honest starting point — four tubes for the whole rack.
  • Half-width tiers can run one 60 cm tube, or two short ones if you want brighter.
  • Leafy greens and seedlings do fine at 15W per tier. Step up to 32W for fruiting plants or dense microgreens — and raise the light (see below).

Two practical notes. Our T8 tubes link in series, up to 5 in one run, which keeps rack wiring clean. And a 120 cm tube doesn’t have to span the exact shelf width — shorter tubes just mean more of them.

Rule of thumb: start with one 120 cm / 15W tube per tier. It covers most leafy greens, microgreens, and seedlings without overkill. Add a second later if you need to.

Can I Replace LED T8 Grow Lights with Fluorescent Tubes?

Many people start with fluorescent shop lights — they’re cheap and they do grow plants. But two things matter if you’re setting up fresh or your old tubes flicker.

Fluorescent tubes flicker. It’s usually too fast to see, but plants and time-lapse cameras notice, and it’s a known cause of inconsistent growth. They also run hot, which matters when the light sits a few centimeters above seedlings.

LED T8 tubes fix both. Ours run on a high-voltage, flicker-free driver (180–265V, so it works on standard mains almost anywhere) and stay cooler, because the LEDs sit on an aluminum housing that pulls heat away.

One more thing: fluorescent fixtures need a ballast; LED tubes don’t. So replacing them removes a whole failure point — same footprint, same mounting, nothing extra to maintain.

How Far Should T8 Grow Lights Be from Your Plants?

Too close and leaves show pale, bleached tips — that’s light burn. Too far and seedlings stretch and get leggy. As a starting point for our tubes:

  • 8W tubes: 10–20 cm above the plants.
  • 15W tubes: 20–35 cm.
  • 32W tubes: 35–50 cm — more power, more distance.

Seedlings and young starts like the closer side; flowering plants want more room. If leaves look bleached, raise the light; if growth looks stretched, lower it a few centimeters. You don’t need a PAR meter — watch the plants, not the numbers.
